Kunming’s rapid removal of the past to allow for growth and the expansion skyward was the primary inspiration for Made in China : Raise. Kunming is changing daily. Buildings have been reduced to piles of rubble, others have been constructed during my 3 month stay. On a walk around the block one will witness a truck hauling away the past and a crane building the future. Rather than restoring historic buildings the approach to preservation is to remove and rebuild a “new-old” version of what previously existed. The piece is intended to be an observation marking this radical transformation. An aspirational future is being built and a foundation is being removed. The consequences of this change can not be foretold.
